A BIG DAY FOR DEAR SYLVÍA

Engine lifted into engine room

As half of the month is over and our season start closing in, it was a big day for our beloved oak boat Sylvía the other day.

Recap: earlier this winter, Sylvía undertook a long journey towards Stykkishólmur in the west of Iceland. She has been in the shipyard undergoing maintenance since. Besides her annual beauty treatment however, Sylvía is in for a big project: a brand-new engine along with new fuel tanks and a new propeller are going to be installed – a complete makeover of this beautiful traditional Icelandic fishing boat that was originally built in 1976.

While the last weeks have gone into taking apart, removing, cleaning and preparing her engine room and lower deck, the other day the big moment had come and Halli and his team could finally put the new engine in its place.

While there is still some work ahead of the team, we can't wait to see Sylvía back here in Húsavík and sail out onto the bay in search for whales.

The new engine was carefully chosen with the environment and sustainability as a top priority. The engine together with the propeller are the newest on the market and will significantly decrease Sylvía's fuel consumption as well as sound levels making her as environmentally friendly as possible for the time being. Not only will the new engine minimise her carbon footprint, but the new fuel tanks ensure that there's no leakage or pollution going to the ocean. Lower sound levels result in a minimal impact on her surrounding and of course, our beloved whales.

Are you ready to join us this season?
